iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak ETA From Pod2G

iOS 5.1′s untethered jailbreak and this is not going to be an ordinary one because we have a new iOS device which has never been jailbroken before not publicly at least. Yes folks I’m talking about the new iPad aka iPad 3, even though the new iPad 3 has been jailbroken (un)tethered by several iOS hacker but the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 or iPad 3 is not publicly available as yet. Pod2G famous iOS hacker and member of Chronic dev team is actively working in jailbreaking iOS 5.1 untethered.

In his last update, the hacker told us the he has successfully bypassed iOS 5.1′s ASLR which brought us one step closer to iOS 5.1′s untethered jailbreak but today’s update in not going to sound good. According to his recent update on social networking site Twitter, the hacker gave us a hint about time release time frame.

“ETA for 5.1 JB : no clue! We’re going to set pieces of the puzzle together this week. We could have issues… Could be 1 month maybe 2… Maybe never… (!)

I know 1 month seems long, but it’s short to work on a project like this when it’s a hobby and you’ve other things to do as well.”

According to Pod2G this jailbreak can take some time, though it was expected that this jailbreak would be released in short period of time because iPad 3 was jailbroken within 24 hours of it’s but that’s not case here folks. You will have to wait a little more for this jailbreak. Remember that iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak also took more than 3 moths. So a month is normal and 2 months is not bad as long as you’re getting an untethered jailbreak for your all new shiny iPad 3.

Finding an exploit is just the beginning of the process, using that exploit to achieve a stable jailbreak on all iOS devices is the toughest part. Pod2G and Chronic dev team is actively working on putting this jailbreak together. Once done, this jailbreak would be released in the form of all major jailbreaking tools like Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze.

iOS 5.1 has already been jailbroken on non A5 device but the jailbreak is still tethered which means you will have to boot your iOS device in jailbroken state every time you reboot it.

Pod2G is the same hacker who gave us an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 and iPhone 4S.

NEWS UPDATE: iStat for iPhone review

iStat for iPhone review

To start off, we would like to thank Bjango for making such a nice application and for allowing us to take it for a test drive. We think they have a real winner here that could be of use to many people for different purposes. Those who manage servers day to day will be glad to have a nicely presented and easy to use view of their servers statistics on the device they already carry around every day (you DO carry an iPhone everywhere you go just like us, right?). While the server daemon is OS X only right now, Bjango tells us that a Windows and Linux server daemon are a definite possibility for the future, and we think their success with this app will skyrocket once a Linux daemon is available since many IT admins use Linux on the back end.

The kind folks over at Macminicolo were nice enough to setup a test server for us to use for the review, but of course being the geeks we are, we have been using iStat to monitor this very server, a dual G5 PowerMac, since the day it was released on the App Store. It has been invaluable for us to be able to see network, disk and performance problems quickly, rather than hear about it hours later. While we have not seen much mention of it on the Bjango site, the server daemon runs perfectly on PPC Macs like this server as well as newer Intel macs. This is of course to be expected since Apples Universal Binary architecture works so well, but some developers give more attention to the Intel side of things or just make new applications Intel only from the start, so kudos to the Bjango developers for making things function smoothly regardless of the architecture of your Mac.
Of course there are many other situations that iStat will be invaluable. For instance, many users like to leave their Mac encoding video or compiling while out and about, and iStat allows users to make sure their Macs fans are still working, or make sure local disks aren’t running out of space. If there is in fact a problem, users can connect via SSH or VNC with a number of applications on the App Store to prevent damage to the machine by stopping processes or simply turning off the machine.
One of the best uses for iStat is one that we hadn’t thought of and discovered by accident. Bjangos Mac software arm iSlayer makes a number of other donationware applications for monitoring a local system. We have been quite fond of iStat Pro for a while now, and recently fell in love with iStat Menus as well. So it was a natural extension of our previous iStat use on the Mac when we stuck our devices in the universal dock next to our screens and discovered just how nice it is to have those iStat graphs on a beautiful, dedicated display, available no matter what you are doing on the Mac.
Below is our rundown of installing the server, connecting to it and using the iPhone app to monitor various macs. The screenshots are thumbnails, you can see larger versions by clicking each one.

Installer
The installer on the Mac side is brief and effective, a single small window with one button requests admin permission to install the daemon as a startup item. Once the daemon is installed, it runs in the background even after the configuration window is closed. It also starts up upon reboot and in general gets out of your way, acting exactly as one would expect a daemon to act.

Server Config
The server configuration is equally simple and easy to use, just a single window showing the access code at the top and a list of connected devices, along with buttons to change the code, de-authorize devices, and view the daemon log. This configuration app does not need to continue running for your device to be able to connect to the machine, it can be closed and forgotten until you need to change the access code or view the log.

Home screen
This is the home screen, what you will see when you first start the app. Notice that already it has found my Mac Mini because Bonjour is being used. There are no IPs to find and remember, no digging through preference panes or opening the terminal. It just works. The app will ask you for the access code which you can find in the configuration app, once you enter it into your iPhone it won’t ask for it again.

iPod Stats
This is the iPod stats screen, it shows memory usage, the amount of storage space you have left, your current IP address, along with your iPods “uptime”, a measure of the time since the last reboot. Also shown is the system load, which among other things gives you some idea of the CPU usage. CPU usage for the iPhone itself is apparently not something that can be accessed with the SDK, though it works for remote Macs.

NEWS UPDATE: Groove 2: The Best Music Player For iOS Just Got Even Better

Groove 2: The Best Music Player For iOS Just Got Even Better

Groove 2: The Best Music Player For iOS Just Got Even Better
Groove 2 gets Retina display graphics for the new iPad, playlist shuffle, and more in latest update.
Groove 2 is the music player that your iOS device’s built-in Music app should have been. It really is an incredible app, and if you haven’t already downloaded it, I urge you to go and do it now. It’s packed full of incredible features that music lovers shouldn’t be without, and with its latest update, it just gets better.
Groove 2 already had some really terrific features that made it a must-have iOS app, including intuitive the ability to download missing album artwork and information, sharing over your favorite social networks, clever organization features, and much more. But with its latest update, there’s even more to enjoy.
The biggest change is that Groove 2 now supports the new iPad’s high-resolution Retina display. If you thought this app looked good before the update, check it out now; I guarantee you’ll be impressed. The iPad also gets new on-screen volume controls, and a new play and pause toggle gesture. In addition, all options have been moved to the ‘Actions’ menu to be consistent with the version.
Another new feature that I’ve been waiting for since I adopted Groove 2 is the ability to shuffle albums and playlists. I really missed a shuffle feature before so it’s great to see it in the version 2.0.2 update. There’s also a new repeat mode for the iPad, and the old ‘Playlist End Action’ feature has been resurrected.
Finally, this update fixes some issues with Last.fm scrobbling and login, blurriness on non-Retina devices, and it improves stability.
Groove 2 currently has 50% off its regular price, so you can grab it for a limited time for just $1.99.

News Update: Next iPhone to support T-Mobile 3G band

T-Mobile Logo
It’s no secret that wireless carriers want the iPhone on their networks, and until last year if you wanted an iPhone in the U.S., AT&T was your only official choice.
However 2011 brought us the CDMA iPhone 4 for Verizon, and later on the iPhone 4S was released with full support for GSM along with CDMA, allowing carriers like Sprint to begin offering the device as well.
But T-Mobile USA has yet to bring the iPhone to their network in any official capacity, in part because their 3G network uses a different radio frequency band than AT&T and the rest of the world, one that current iPhone hardware does not support.
Unlocked iPhone owners will be quite familiar with this limitation, as unlocked devices built for AT&T’s network will fall back to 2G EDGE service when used with a T-Mobile USA sim card.
However, comments from T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray on CNET suggest that the next iPhone will be able to run on T-Mobile’s 3G network:
The next chipset will support AWS
The challenge that existed in the past will go away
Ray says he has inside knowledge of Apple’s plans for the next iPhone chipset, and that it will support T-Mobile’s AWS 3G band. However, he made it clear that Apple ultimately decides which carrier networks get the iPhone regardless of technical capability.
Given Apple’s recent expansion of iPhone availability in the U.S., it only makes sense that T-Mobile would be next in line.

IOS 5.1 JAILBREAK UPDATE BYPASS ASLR

News Update

iOS 5.1 jailbreak update bypasses the ASLR

Under: Apple iPhone, Phone Software

Date: April 25th, 2012

Most of the iOS unfaithful that have jailbroken their iPhone would like to know the status of the jailbreak for iOS 5.1, and now apparently iPhone hacker pod2g has hit Twitter to update people on the state of the iOS 5.1 jailbreak in numerous tweets, so we thought we’d pass that info along to our iOS readership.
According to the guys over at the iDownload Blog, pod2g used his Twitter account to let theiOS unfaithful know that the hackers have now managed to bypass the Address Space Layout Randomisation (ASLR), apparently the complicated security measure could have taken much longer, but the guys have already achieved this.

However there is some bad news with the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, and that is it appears a public jailbreak still looks to be quite a way away with pd2g tweeting that he has no clue as to the ETA of 5.1 JB, they are working on setting together pieces of the puzzle but have issues, and as such it could be a month or two or even never.
Of course when it comes to jailbreaks, one does have to realise that these hackers do have normal jobs they have to do and working on a jailbreak is a hobby, and could also be working on other projects we don’t know about, and of course no one likes someone who complains about them taking too long to deliver.
The jailbreakers do a fairly decent job at keeping everyone updated on the latest developments when it comes to jailbreaking, so basically you’ll need to be fairly patient for them to finally crack iOS 5.1 and deliver that public jailbreak.
